An Amber alert was made and the girl’s name and picture were widely circulated. Recently, an 11-year-old Black girl was abducted. In 1920, Democrats were different but was the Orlando Morning Sentinel? Typically a conservative newspaper over the years, they have endorsed Democrats in three of the last four Presidential Elections. The paper became the Sentinel-Star in 1974 and in 1982 became the Orlando Sentinel.
In 1965 the newspaper was sold to the large Tribune Company of Chicago (now TRONC).

We’re sorry that reporters and editors failed in our duty to readers, to the community, and to the Groveland Four and their families.” We’re sorry that our coverage of the event and its aftermath lent credibility to the cover-up and the official, racist narrative. We’re sorry that the newspaper at the time did between little and nothing to seek the truth. We’re sorry for the Orlando Sentinel’s role in this injustice. On Friday, the Florida Cabinet pardoned them. “Two years ago, the Florida Legislature issued a ‘heartfelt apology’ to the four black men wrongly accused of raping a Lake County woman in 1949.
Only then did the now Orlando Sentinel apologize for their role. In 2017, the State of Florida formally apologized and in 2019 formally pardoned them.
Morning sentinel arrests trial#
The Orlando Morning Sentinel coverage aided in the false persecution and the cover-up of the murder of two of the boys by Sheriff Willis McCall when transporting them to their new trial won by NAACP Legal Fund attorney Thurgood Marshall. This story is documented in the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Devil in the Grove,” by Gilbert King. In 1949, four Black boys in neighboring Lake County were wrongly accused of the rape of a white woman.
